Launch: Breaking Broken English by Michelle Hartman

26/04/2019 @ 18:00 - 20:00

Join us for the launch of Michelle Hartman’s latest book titled “Breaking Broken English: Black-Arab Literary Solidarities.” The launch will be a discussion between herself and student activists from Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights at McGill University in an attempt to highlight some of the important passages of the book. This book is the perfect medium through which discussions on solidarity, commitment, and sisterhood/brotherhood could be mediated. Much like the book itself, its launch is meant to replicate and honour the community ties that are the backbone of meaningful and worthwhile activism, solidarity, and feminisms. There is no better space for these conversation than at L’Euguélionne — a feminist bookstore dedicated to these particular conversations.

More information on the book and the author:
Black-Arab political and cultural solidarity has had a rich history in the US. That alliance is again exerting an influence on society as Black and Arab American activists are joining forces in formations like Black for Palestine to address social justice issues. Breaking Broken English explores this relationship through language, with a focus on Arab American literature that use the English language creatively to put into practice many of the ideas advanced by Black American thinkers.

Michelle Hartman is professor of Arabic literature and director of the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University as well as a research associate at the Simone de Beauvoir Institute at Concordia University. She is the author of several books, including Native Tongue, Stranger Talk: The Arabic and French Literary Landscapes of Lebanon.

Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.
